September 2014 – Elba Island – International exercise “Ramogepol 2014”
At about 6 miles north of the Island of Elba on the 16th and 17th of September the international antipollution exercise Ramogepol 2014 was held by Italy, France and the Principality of Monaco with the participation of Spain as associated country. An accident between an oil tanker and a container ship was simulated with a spill in the sea of about 5000 m³ of crude oil and the immediate response of an international antipollution task force.
The exercise, which saw the presence of the Environment Undersecretary, Silvia Velo, was carried out in Italian territorial waters, in an ecologically sensitive area (Pelagos Sanctuary/Tuscan Archipelago). Castalia vessels played an active part, on the basis of an agreement with the Environment Ministry TITO, JERZY and ECOGIGLIO, as well as the support of the vessel BONASSOLA which hosted the international authorities, observers and press.
The accident simulation was carried out with a tanker made available by ENI, involving air and sea craft of Italy, France and Spain, together with a great many technicians and experts in the sector from the countries involved, and the vessel of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The activities were coordinated at this strategic level by the Environment Ministry, and at the operational level by the Coastguard.
